2017 has been a memorable year. Who will forget the severe flooding, having our weekly services at the Shaw House, closing the church doors to summer weddings, concerts and retreats? No Blessing of Boats and Bicycles. No Strawberry Social. It is this place that anchors our activities and we thank you for your commitment to helping us maintain its integrity through your efforts and donations.
Along with other Toronto Island enterprises, St. Andrew suffered financially from the flooding and the subsequent island closure. Our normal revenue was drastically reduced and so we are writing to ask for your support.
Good news was received in June when St. Andrew by-the-Lake Church received Diocesan permission to conduct same-gender marriages – one of few in the diocese. We are pleased to have advocated for this step toward inclusiveness in our community and to have been acknowledged for it. We have had one same-gender marriage and we look forward to more.
June also brought turmoil when we learned that our minister, Michael Marshall, would be retiring at age 70 on June 30. The heartfelt response of the community in support of Michael continuing at St. Andrew was overwhelming. Bishop Kevin Robertson had a difficult introduction at his first visit to the Parish on July 9. But in true Island spirit we gathered a week later to celebrate Michael’s long ministry with us and to bid him “Happy Paddling”.
The Rev. Canon Douglas Graydon was appointed our interim Priest-in-Charge until December 31, 2018. Visit the church website for an introduction to Douglas and to read his weekly sermons. Better still – join us Sunday mornings at 10:30!
In all of this and more, we rely on the support of our congregation and friends. We hope that you will consider making a donation to allow our work to continue.
As we say goodbye to the Year of Rubber Boots …we wish you a most joyful Christmas and look forward to seeing you at St. Andrew’s great holiday events. Douglas Graydon, Elizabeth Amer, Marian Lye and the congregation of St. Andrew by-the-Lake
