The Toronto Islands have experienced two 100-year floods in the past 3 years. 2020 forecasts are for flooding again this spring, perhaps even worse than we have ever seen before.
The Toronto Island Community Association (TICA) has struck a working committee with a mandate to prepare the community for such an event, which includes 6 weeks commencing mid-March of preventative sandbagging involving a workforce of around 250 volunteers to man the sandbag stations, plus those who can provide other forms of support such as food and drink to the work parties, and tools, etc. We have to purchase many of our own sandbags this year, as well as the plastic sheeting to protect the sandbags from water ingress between them, and additional pumps should we need them.
In order to do this we have asked for financial help from the community, and community friends and families. The Church of St. Andrew by the Lake has kindly agreed to take donations (you can etransfer, give a cheque, or use the Canada Helps button denoting 'Flood Fund') and will provide charitable donation receipts to those who contribute to our cause. There are many other ways to help us fulfill our role as stewards of the Toronto Islands and protect our land. Please contact the Flood Committee at email@example.com to find out more.
